I've now been completely sidetracked into World of Warcraft, so I have started a blog to cover events as they unfold. Don't worry, I will be returning to XBox Land eventually.
In the mean time, come visit Cenarion Circle.

Sidetracked by the PC!
I've barely turned on the XBox lately, as I have been pulled into World of Warcraft. I won't submit my opinions on that here, as this is an XBox blog, but I'm sure you can piece together the clues.
My 5-year-old son tried Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 and was quickly frustrated. I believe it is a bit above his level for now.
My son & daughter each played with Sonic Heroes with a bit more success.
I played some old-school emulated games with DaftApeth the other day; nothing to write home about, but quite the nostalgic trip.

First Impressions: KotOR 2
It took me somewhere in the neighborhood of 45 to 50 hours to finish the first Knights of the Old Republic, so it is with a bit of trepediation that I have embarked on a return journey into the same world, in the form of Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords. I'm sure that some will snicker at my KotOR playing time, so let me state now that I am a leisurely player. I like to explore the nooks and crannies, seeking ways to improve my character and uncover the secrets and surprises left by the developer.
I am now about five hours into KotOR 2, and in a position to deliver to you my first impressions.
First off, it is not surprising that the preponderance of the game interface is more or less intact. There are a few minor enhancements, but as this is a follow-on to Bioware's smash hit, developed by another party (Obsidian), I was not expecting any major changes. Sith Lords is basically an expansion pack.
And this is a good thing. The UI for KotOR was very functional for an RPG, and easy to use.
The first difference that I have noticed is that there are frame rate issues. These may have existed in KotOR, but I did not notice them then. These issues are especially obvious in area where there are force fields.
The audio is definately not as good as the first game. Some times the critical dialog volume is much lower than it should be. The voice acting is, at times, subpar. Some passages of dialog within the same conversation were obviously recorded at a different time as other passages, and the effect is a bit jarring if you pay attention to such things. Each of these issues serves to remove the player from the submersion into the game.
This last item can be viewed as either a good or bad thing, depending on your outlook. My thought is that it is more good than bad.
Whereas the plot in KotOR was very adept at pulling you along to the next stage, each section was pretty much distinct. In Sith Lords, the plot progression is very smooth, and there is less distinction betweek sections. This leads to a pronounced "Just One More" (JOM) effect, causing me to stay up far later than I really should.
The JOM Effect was one that I first noticed as such in the original SimCity and has been present in the Civilization games and every Sid Meier game that I have played. The effect is that I get pulled further into the game, minute-by-minute, until it's suddenly 4am and the next day is wrecked.
Although it appears that there is a lot of bitching here, I am enjoying the game and look forward to many more hours of whacking things with a sword of light.

More from the Ghost
After hearing a large number of favorable comments about Ghost Recon 2, particularly the online play, I have purchased a copy. I will be playing through some of the Single Player missions before going online.
In other news-worthy items, my wife has taken the LSAT, so the pressure is off for now in the picking-up-the-slack department. We'll see how that factors into the whole free-time issue.
More soon.
Really.

Can't Stop the Golf
As nuts as this sounds, and after waiting in line to buy Halo 2 at midnight last week, I have only played a little.
I could blame this on the fact that I am studying for my MCP test, or that my wife is studying for the LSAT and I have to cook and take care of the kids (both true), but the honest fact is that I am mired in Outlaw Golf 2.
It is a challenging game, and a rather addictive one at that, and I just find that it is easier to try to get past the next 9-hole challenge rather than go through the hassles of trying to find a Halo 2 game on XBL.
I'm sure the phase will pass quickly, especially after I finish the game (OG2, that is).

The New Halo
Of course, it rocks, and rocks hard.
I played a couple of games online and got my ass handed to me, as expected.
I'm not really what you'd call serious competition.
I'm better at team play rather than full-on fragfests.
I'm not really a twitch gamer.
But!
I was able to get on at about 1:00am (one hour after release) and create a clan, snagging the name that I wanted (Justice).
Gotta go - Earth Needs Me.

First Impressions: Outlaw Golf 2
I picked up Outlaw Golf 2 the other day, and I have to say that it is quite a bargain. For $20, I have the best golf game I have played in the XBox.
OK, it's the ONLY Golf game I have played on the XBox, but it's still quite fun.
It is rather challenging, but entertaining and motivating. There are many, MANY unlockables, possibly too many. For example, there are 15 challenges on the practice range, and only 2 of them are initially available. Of the 10 playable characters, only 4 are playable before unlocking others.
Still, there is a lot to this game, numerous modes and much challenging golf to be had. I am actually surprised at the price of this title, but I guess that's a decision the distributors made. It is rated Mature, so I don't think you'll be playing this one with the tots.
I am eager to try out the multiplayer modes, both single-box and via XBox Live!

Modding Complete
I started out Monday night with my soldering iron in hand and the patient disassembled before me. It took 30 minutes for the soldering, and another 30 minutes to get all of the hardware connected together. My version 1.3 XBox now has a Xecutor 3 mod chip, a 160-GB hard drive, and a larger case to accomodate the new hard drive (with space for another). Worked perfectly right off the bat, no troubles (save the Xtender 1-3 cable swap problem).
The software went pretty smoothly as well. About 30 minutes to flash the BIOS (would have been faster but I couldn't get it to work via disk) through the network, 30 minutes to back up my original drive, another 30 minutes to install EvoX, XBMC, Avalaunch, and some other applications.
After that, I started ripping my games to the HDD for ease of access and longevity.
I am very happy with my new box and will be updating as new features come up.

First Impressions: Magna Cum Laude
I played a good number of the old Leisure Suit Larry games and was moderately amused by them. The latest incarnation is somewhat of a departure from the old style games, and not necessarily in a bad way.
The ladies are fair-to-hot and the mini-games are easy-to-bloody-difficult. The game can be quite frustrating at times, and quite a lot of fun at others.
Load times are awful, but the blow is cushioned by numerous images of the various in-game babes in various states of undress. I should mention that the load screen girls are both rendered girls and photographs of their real-life counterparts as well.
I am fairly close to the end of the game at this point, so I will provide a more thoughtful posting once I am done.

Mod world, here I come!
Somehow I came to the decision the other day that it is time to mod my XBox.
I have ordered the parts, and soon I will be adding a mod chip and support for additional hard drives.
Updates will be available as things progress.

Belated Update
Busy, busy. I have been lax in my bloggage.
After finishing Fable, I loaned the game out to Chosen1.
I am playing around with The Sims 2 and have not spent any time with my XBox.
My daughter (seven years old) did manage to complete Story Mode in DOA3 with one of the characters. I was very impressed - this is not too easy a feat, particularly for one so young.
My copy of Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude should be on its way to me now, and I will hopefully be playing it this weekend.
Let's see, what else...
I've preordered The Bard's Tale, but I don't know how much I will be able to play... you see, it comes out November 2nd, just a week before Halo 2. If it ships on November 3rd, I may be able to get it by November 5th, or on the 8th.
I'm picking up my copy of Halo 2 at 12:01am on November 9th.

Fable Complete
I finally finished up Fable, with right around 17 hours put into the game. I did a fair number of side quests, but definately not all. And I did putter around a bit, getting married three times and buying any building I could.
Over all, I found it to be a very fun game. As testiment to this, I have started again as an evil spell-slinger.

Norty Fable
I've made scads of progress in Fable. I've completed the Arena and gone through the Prison section. Now I must get to Hook Island, which I'm pretty sure is nearly the end.
I really got sucked into the game last night, finally getting to bed at 4:30am, which is not something I've done with any other game. There's definately some "Just One More" syndrome going on here.
I was actually hoping to get in some Halo, but that Evil, Bad, Norty Fable kept me in its iron grip.
Maybe once I've finished Fable.
Or maybe after I've played Fable again as an evil wizard...

Triple Play
I had a full weekend of XBoxage, and three games to cover, so let's get to it.
I am now deeply into Fable and not disappointed. Three of us have bought it (myself, DaftApeth, and OrpheusSail) and I am certain that all of us are having a great time with the game. They are certainly welcome to chime in here and speak up if they like.
DaftApeth & I started back into Halo, with every intent (at least on my part) of playing through the game, in preparation for Halo 2. We covered the first two sections in about an hour but then got sidetracked onto Fable.
The Guy Game is going to be the divisive one, I think. We have played the first four episodes in 3-player mode now, and I still think it is a fun, harmless drinking game. I will hold off on speaking for the other two, but I'm pretty sure one generally agrees with me and the other thinks it's a wasted effort. I'm pretty sure we all enjoyed the embedded arcade games (BallzOut, BallzIn, BallzShots) though. Rather similar in playability to Fuzion Frenzy.
More later - I have to get back to my Fable!

More on Fable
I've been able to get in a couple more hours of Fable, so I'll relate what I have done and learned.
First off, let me retract one of my complaints. There certainly is the ability to assign expressions to the D-Pad, by Shifting (using the Right Trigger). This certainly helps.
So far, I'd have to call Fable "Linear but Free-Roaming". Parts of the story are certainly very linear, but there is also the ability to do as you wish. I just wish I could tell the Guildmaster to bug off and stop nagging me about quests.
I have bought a house (I've not decorated it yet) and rented it out. I'm not sure what sort of income I am getting from the rental, but I guess I could figure that out if I poked around a bit.
I've also bought a huge sword that I cannot use yet - it's too damn heavy! However, I am still allowed to Equip and Wield said sword, and this yielded the most humor I have seen in the game so far.
I'm having a great time so far, thrashing bandits and beetles alike. I'm on the verge of beginning the Darkwood quest, where I imagine I will encounter Balverines for the first time.
As far as my character goes, I am emphasizing Strength, as I seem to be mainly using the sword with a little bit of Magic and an even lesser amount of Archery. Morally, I'm just following my heart, not specifically going for Good or Evil, but just doing what I would do in the situation. I don't know where my alignment currently is.
Short-term goals: Finish the Escort mission, decorate my house.
Long-term goals: Buy every house in Bowerstone. I'd love to be able to do this without killing anyone, but I don't know how feasible this is. I don't know if the people in town die off or if they have to be killed by the "Hero".
Of course, I will provide updates as I progress.

First Impressions: Fable
Sometimes I really hate Blogger. This is my second time doing this FI, so it is going to be a little bit shorter than it was.
I finally picked up Fable and was able to squeeze in two hours of play. I got through my Guild training, killed the Wasp Queen, and explored the first town a little bit.
Overall, I must say that Fable is Great. Not Awesome, but a solid Great.
Once again, it seems that Peter Molyneux's reach has exceeded his grasp. There is so much here in the game, and so many greater things hinted at but not realized.
In certain situations, there are framerate issues. In one case, these issues actually impact your ability to complete a quest (the 50-second running quest). Additionally, there are some UI consistency issues. And I really wish there were a way to perform more interaction than the severely limited menu.
But these are all niggling little issues. The game itself is great fun so far, and I look forward to more very soon.
I will provide a full review once I have progressed through the game significantly.

Of Release Dates
Today is the day for Fable.
I know my countdown is counting down until tomorrow, and this post is to discuss such things.
Usually when a company announces a release date, that is basically the Ship Date. Stores will typically get the game either late that day or fairly early the following day. That is why the dates on the right-hand sidebar are one day after the "Official Release Date."
Apparently things are a bit different for the AAA titles. Yesterday I called the EBGames where I had preordered Fable. The clerk told me that they are expecting Fable at around noon today, and today is the Release Date. I read some stories online about store managers personally driving to the warehouse to pick up their shipments.
The thing is, I consider Fable to be a AA title, not a AAA title. If this level of devotion is for Fable, I truly wonder what we should expect on November 9th for Halo 2. Chosen1 has guessed that sales will begin at 12:01am on the 9th, and I must say that I think he is probably right.

More in the Way of Jumping and Shooting
Well, I have played through a few more sections of Prince of Persia and I am pleased that the game is not flagging or becoming monstrously difficult yet. It is a very entertaining platformer with some tight spots, but nothing that I can't overcome.
I also managed to get in some co-op Halo as well, introducing a noob to the game. He definately enjoyed it. My kids tried as well, with limited success. I think the dual-thumbstick controls are just a bit too complex for ones so young. Maybe I'll just have them stick to platformers for the time being.
Limited XBox time this weekend, as I was Beta testing World of Warcraft (WoW) for a significant part of both Saturday and Sunday.
2 days until Fable!

Axon Hot! + Gmail Invites Available
Tenuously XBox related: I activated an axon in the I Love Bees ARG this morning. I was quite nervous, but the mission was accomplished successfully.
In addition, I have 6 Gmail invitations available; first come, first served. Just send me an email (xboxlove@gmail.com) and I'll hook you up!

First Impressions: Prince of Persia
I know I'm way behind the curve on this one, but I just started Prince of Persia: Sands of Time (PoP) last night.
It's quite an interesting platformer with some action flavor thrown in, at least so far - I've only just started.
I didn't have very much time to play this past weekend, with visitors from out of town.
8 days until Fable!

First Impressions: SRS
I have several things to say about the game, both good and bad.
I like many of the features in the game; the freedom, the variety of challenges, the realistic depiction of speed.
There are several other items that piss me off, though.
First, there is definate "rubber-banding." No matter how fast your car is, your opponents can keep up with you. On the other hand, they will not get more than a few seconds ahead of you, so it's easy to catch back up.
In the garage, it's difficult to go through the parts and tune your car. I think it will be better to do it offline with a spreadsheet and references than to try to sort through everything in-game.
I'll post more thoughts as I get them, and a full review later.

Screwed by EBGames
This is my second time typing this - blogspot screwed me too. Not having a good day.
I preordered Street Racing Syndicate online from EBGames.com, strictly to get the bonus item for preorders (codes to unlock some extras in the game). The web site has this to say about it:
Bonus item will ship with purchased product, and is only available while supplies last. If you choose In-Store Pickup for this game, please contact the store for bonus item availability.
From this, I infer that sometimes stores don't have enough to go around. Fair enough. I contacted the pick-up store a week before the release date. They did not have any bonus, but they said that usually they ship with the game itself.
Also last week, I picked up the bonus DVD for Fable, which is not due out for two more weeks. Those items apparently went to stores several weeks in advance.
Well, when I went in to pick the game up today, not only did they not have any bonus items, but they had not idea what I was talking about. The clerk called another store in the area and they had no clue either.
When I called EBGames customer support, they basically said that if I want the bonus item, I need to have the game shipped to my house. In other words, I'm screwed.
I'm going to have to seriously reevaluate my relationship with EBGames.

13 days until Fable.
Tidbits
Kudos to DaftApeth on his first review. We are expecting more from him. Please comment if you, the reader, want to see something specific from us as far as reviews are concerned.
I am waiting for Game Day to give a full review of The Guy Game - I don't think it would be fair to try to assess it without going through it with multiple players.
I'll be picking up my Street Racing Syndicate today and should be able to give my review by early next week.
More info as conditions warrant.

Review: Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy
5/10
Summary
Can be fun but not very original.
Details
Sphinx is a 3D platformer that casts you in the role of some sort of human/monkey thing. You are the chosen one, etc. and you have to save the world. Very original story.
The game starts out nice and simple with a level that basically acts as a tutorial to the main features. You have to pick up rocks, jump over some lava, and collect coconuts for a worm thingy. All the usual stuff. And this is where the game stays for as far as I was able to play. No matter which level you get to, it's all the usual stuff. There doesn't even seem to be any vehicle/animal control sections. You just run around doing 'go fetch' tasks for various NPCs.
The graphics are nice enough, but nothing really compelling.
Basically, go get Voodoo Vince if you want to play a platformer. Or buy a PS2 and get Jak & Daxter 1 or Ratchet & Clank 1 & 2.
First Impressions: The Guy Game
Looks like each episode takes about 30 minutes to complete, so that's in the neighborhood of 10 hours playing time total. There is replayability, though, since you can replay episodes using a bank of reserve questions.
The game pace is a bit slow in some area and rather quick in others. I feel that I must deduct points for pacing.
All in all, I think it's going to be a fun and challenging game for the gang when we get together on the next good Saturday with some beers.
I'll give it an 8.0 out of 10.

Crash and Burn
I managed to get online and fly the Crimson Skies Friday evening with TriNutz and Chosen1. It was then that I came to the realization that I really suck at this game. No, really. Really, really suck.
I don't know what it is - I can usually do fairly well at most games, but I am having real problems with Crimson Skies for some reason.
Anyway, I also picked up Prince of Persia on Friday for $20 at the new Fry's that just opened in Atlanta. I guess I could have saved a little by getting it used, but it was there, I was there, so I did it. I also picked up a wireless controller for $17.
Tomorrow (Tuesday, August 31) I'm hoping to get SRS (preorder) and The Guy Game. TGG should be a good addition for Game Day with the guys, especially on those occasions when beer is involved.

Guests
We had a couple over last night, friends of ours. They are to be married soon. The guy is very good with kids and played Fuzion Frenzy with my two rug rats. And just let me say that if I were younger and single, he would have some competition for the affections of his fiancé.
Why is this? Well, I think it would suffice to say that she is very cute, young, and Rich. Not "rich", but "Rich". She works in technology and is a tech geek. She was telling me that she needs a new Palm and was asking for my recommendations.
And here is the kicker: She mentioned that since she got her big-screen TV, she gets kind of dizzy when she plays Halo.
Be still, my heart.

Axons have gone hot
The Bungie Forums are going nuts with the ilovebees.com stuff the last two days. I have been transcribing the contents of the unlocked audio files. I will have links later once my web site permissions have been fixed.

PlastiDip follow-up
DaftApeth reported that his PlastiDip'd controller has had the B button start to stick. Mine was fine for a few hours, and now my A button is sticking.
I have not taken the controller apart yet to clean it, but when I do I am assuming that I will have to take some fine sandpaper to the button holes and clean out any residue. I will report when there is something to report.

Pink Slip Racing
One topic that I wanted to cover with regard to SRS is about pink-slip racing. First, an explanation.
In SRS, you can build your car up from the original unmodded pile of mediocrity to a blazin' street dominator. Race this car in the game and/or online with other players. If you are feeling really bold, you can raise the stakes by racing for pink slips, aka the car title. If you lose the race, you lose your car. The car is gone from your system and the winner of the race now has a new set of wheels.
Presumably, possible cheating is overcome by moving the car data into memory and erasing it from the hard drive before the race begins, so that you can't disconnect if you are losing. I'm not sure about this point - we will have to see what happens when the game is released.
Although I will probably not do this very much, this type of racing appeals to me. I would not do it unless I was fairly confident that I would win, and if lose I am not the type that would be upset by the loss - I'd just have to start over with a new car.
I'm of the thought that you should not bet what you are not willing to lose, no matter the circumstance. Take responsibility for your actions and choices and accept the consequences.
You may discuss.

Street Racing Syndicate
Well, I figured I would get one of the four "Import Mod" games coming out in the next few months, but I decided to act on the information I have so far. I may regret the decision, but I have preordered Street Racing Syndicate (SRS). It should be out August 31, at the same time as The Guy Game (TGG). I am sure I will get TGG as well, but I don't care too much for the TGG Preorder Bonus.
Maybe decisions like this will paint me as a libidinous lecher. So be it. This perception is probably enhanced by the knowledge that I will most likely buy Leisure Suite Larry: Magna Cum Laude, Playboy: The Mansion, and Conker: Live and Reloaded. And that I play DOA: XBV as well, of course.

RSC2 Pro Career Complete!
I have finally completed the Pro Career in RalliSport Challenge 2. After this, I went back and unlocked all of the unlockables, so I am counting that "complete". True, I have only 475 points out of a maximum of 720, but I have more important things to do.
I ran the first race in the Champion Career and got 8 points (of a possible 20). Not too good, but the challenge level has definately risen.
The kids played some Fuzion Frenzy and DOA3 this weekend, almost exclusively with each other. They are still horrible on FF but are getting better at DOA3.
I was surprised to see OrpheusSail on XBL Friday night, so I jacked in PGR2 and we ran a few races. It was his first time racing online and he beat my ass every time (nearly). He did get enough Kudos to rank up to level 2.

My son kicks ass
My 5-year-old son decided to play some DOA3 last night while I was busy with another project, so he went into Story mode and proceeded to beat the first four opponents straight through.
When I had a break, I joined him in a tag-team match. He did very well, finishing the match in some cases when I was knocked out. I am sure he will be even more of a threat once he learns how to do low and high moves and combos.
In RalliSport Challenge 2 I completed a few more races. I am up to 314 points in the Pro Career, out of 720. After that are the Champion and Super Rally levels.
I have quite a few items to unlock, and I do not see any good FAQ online. I am considering writing one, but that may not be possible due to time constraints. More later, I hope.

More RalliSport
Continued with RalliSport Challenge 2 and completed another few races perfectly.
This time I used my new rubberized controller. It is definately more sticky, almost too much so. It is definately one that will not slip out of your hands.
I played DOA3 again with my daughter the other night. The score was even, but I had actually held back quite a bit.
The Guy Game and Street Racing Syndicate both come out on August 31 - I am hoping for good things from them. Of course, once Fable comes out in September, I probably won't be doing anything else but that for quite a while.

PlastiDip
The gang (or some of us) had Bad Movie Night at DaftApeth's crib on Saturday night. I showcased RSC2 and RotK for those who had not seen it, and we watched an in-game preview of Fable. I have been reading several previews of Fable lately, and let me tell you that I am actually more eager to get Fable than I am Halo 2.
I also brought over a can of PlastiDip and DaftApeth rubberized one of his S controllers. He loves the new feel. I will be following suit myself when I have a free moment. The how-to is located on Metku.net.

RalliSport Recovery
Started back on RSC2 and am back in winning form. I raced several challenges to first place finishes, and put the controller away when I placed sixth on a hill climb challenge.
I am currently in the heart of the Pro career, with many options available to me. I will race a few more of the challenges available in order to unlock some of the new tracks and cars before revisiting my less-than-perfect races in order to better my score and boost my points total.

Kids on DOA3
I have skipped an entry; I have had two days of XBoxing since the last entry. I will make it up by having two entries, but I will divide by subject rather than by date.
My kids get 30 minutes of video entertainment per day. This can be in the form of television, computer games, or XBox. When they came back home from their summer vacation, they usually opted for TV, watching Monkey King VCDs or something like that. I suppose this is because that's what they were doing while in China.
For the last week or so, they have shifted to XBox. They usually play Fuzion Frenzy or Munch's Oddysee, as most of the other games are a bit too advanced for them.
I decided to show DOA3 to my 5-year-old son, since he has been watching some martial arts in the Monkey King videos. He also took Kung Fu last year, but not at a very high level, obviously.
I started him off with one-on-one mode, taking it easy on him, letting him learn the basics. He picked it up very quickly, and very soon I didn't have to give him a handicap.
My 7-year-old daughter took my place and the two kids had a great time.
Yesterday, I played a few rounds with my daughter. Sometimes I held back, but in the later fights she was doing very well.
I have many thoughts as to why the kids have picked up on DOA3 so quickly, but they are probably obvious. Either way, I will explore these at a later time.

RotK is hard!
I was bopping along with my new-found toy last night (Return of the King [RotK]), and it suddenly got hard. Very hard. It was a bit too much for me at the moment - I put that away for now and went back to RSC2.
Hmmm... maybe I was having an off night. For the first time, I did not place first in a challenge. I did four challenges last night, and got 20 points, 17 points, 15 points, and 20 points. 20 points is the maximum (first place).
I will have to go back and redo those. Perhaps on a better night.

Return of the King
I started Return of the King, and it seems very impressive so far. I am definately taking it to DaftApeth's on Saturday for some co-op play.
I have not gotten very far into it, so I will wait before delivering specific impressions until I have played through it a bit more.

Welcome to TriNutz!
We've got another clan member on XBL now - TriNutz! I raced with him and with Chosen1 on Friday night in PGR2.
I've not been racing in PGR2 very much lately; when I have driven, it has been in RSC2. But I did play long enough Friday night to get to rank 9 online.
Also on Friday I bought Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. I've had it in the back of my mind for a while, and Circuit City had it marked down to $20, so I picked it up. No time to play it yet, though.

My dad cannot drive
That is not a fair characterization. Actually, I threw him in front of RSC2 and told him which is the accelerator. At the end of a long and tiring day. After a beer. And to be honest, he drove better than I did the first time I tried PGR.
Let me rewind a bit.
Friday afternoon, we were preparing to head to my father's house for the weekend. We packed up everything and I snuck the XBox into the back of the van, telling my wife that I had brought it after we were an hour down the road.
I didn't unpack it until Saturday night, as a way of introducing it to my dad. He tried a bit of RSC2, and I did a challenge. That was pretty much it, with the exception that I did run the XBox a bit on Sunday night, finally finishing off the Amateur Career with a perfect score. Oh, and I started the Pro Career, but just the first challenge.
DaftApeth and OrpheusSail played Full Spectrum Warrior (FSW) for an extended period of time on Saturday. They were apparently very impressed with it. It is on my "to get" list, but I'm in no hurry.

Rally Driving
No one was online last night, so I decided to do more of my Amateur Career in RalliSport Challenge 2. I guess I'm getting pretty good at driving games, because I'm not having any problems. Sure, the occasional bobble here and there, but I've gotten 20 points on each race (which is the max) and I'm nearly done.
Of course, I don't expect it to get really hard until I open up the Pro and higher Careers.
There's a new t-shirt in the ilovebees shop on cafepress.com that shows the following: "11+9+4=24". This has fueled speculation that the actual release date for Halo 2 will be August 24th. I am hopeful, but not convinced.

Welcome to OrpheusSail!
Well, Charon (now aka OrpheusSail) has succumbed to peer pressure and bought an XBox. He has gotten XBL and PGR2 as well (as required), so we'll have more racers in our little group. We may have to form a clan soon.
I picked up RalliSport Challenge 2 last night and ran the first race on the "Amateur" level. I was not very used to how the car handles on dirt (I've only ever raced in PGR & PGR2), so I made quite a few flubs. I still placed 1st out of 20, though.
I will be giving more thoughts on RSC2 as I progress through the career.
On a non-XBox note, I had a free PC game coupon in my hot little hand, so I went to Best Buy and picked up Korsun Pocket. There were several other choices, obviously, but I had several thoughts on the matter.
First of all, I want a game that I will play. I spend little gaming time on my PC now, so I'm not going to get any game that I can play on my XBox.
Also, I would like to get something that I can play in an "interrupted" fashion. Nothing with a long, deep storyline or that requires long periods of undivided attention.
And I don't want to have to upgrade my PC.
I may have gotten City of Heroes, but they were sold out. I don't know how much time I could devote to a MMORPG anyway.
Korsun Pocket seemed to fit the bill perfectly. I haven't played any sort of strategy board game in years and years, but it was my introduction (along with AD&D) to gaming in the first place. It's the whole reason I got into computers in the first place; I discovered that you could play games on computers.
I can play for single turns or for hours at a stretch. I can play by email.
And I don't have to change a thing on my PC. I could have waited and bought Doom 3 on release, but then I would need a whole new system. I would much rather wait for Doom 3 for the XBox.
I have the perspective now to see why consoles like the XBox are so awesome. But I also know that something like Korsun Pocket will never be on any console, nor should it be attempted.

Rainbow Six 3 and Morrowind
While assembling a deck table, I downloaded my Rainbow Six 3 content. Then I tried the first mission.
It's a pretty tough one, and I didn't get as far on it as I did when I played on Saturday. I am definately a more cautious player than Ed, who also played on Saturday.
I started again on Morrowind as well. I've just been playing various games lately, hopping around. When I was playing Knights of the Old Republic (KotOR), I pretty much just stuck with it until I was finished.
This time around, I decided to go with a meat-and-potatoes approach, playing a Scout (light warrior). I couldn't quite bring myself to go the full Barbarian/Warrior route.
Oh, and DaftApeth called and let me know that he had finished Beyond Good and Evil. He had just borrowed it Saturday evening. I guess sometimes it's better to be unemployed.

XBox Live down?
I tried getting onto XBox Live last night, with limited success. I was able to update Rainbow Six 3, but I could not download any new content.
Anyway, I am intrigued by this new www.ilovebees.com buzz about Halo 2.

Mixed weekend
I have quite a bit to catch up on.
First thing is that my kids are back from China, so my life is now noisier, messier, and more chaotic.
I picked up Rainbow Six 3 on my way to DaftApeth's house Saturday - it was gaming day. We played some Operation Flashpoint, a little bit of Rainbow Six (I was expecting split-screen multiplayer co-op, didn't get it), and had Charon try out some of the Long Beach cars on the Test Track. Afterward, we had a wonderful time watching a really horrible movie: Druids
Charon is a friend of ours - he usually plays PC games with DaftApeth on Saturdays. We have been pressuring him to get an XBox and XBL, and I think he may finally be caving in. We shall see.
I picked up Armed and Dangerous again last night, went through the first bit again. It is rather lackluster, but potentially fun - I will have to go a bit further.

Alone again, naturally
Made another play date with DaftApeth. Called him. No answer. Again.
*sigh*
Played Munch for a while, then more Gladius. Gladius is starting to get hard!
More good reviews on Sudeki. Looks like I'll have to pick it up in a couple of weeks.
I'm going to try to go to DaftApeth's house on Saturday and play PC games, maybe some XBoxage as well. The kids will be coming back from China today (yikes!), so I may get less XBoxification. Well, maybe after they go to bed.

Potpourri
A little bit of this, a little bit of that.
Had a play date with DaftApeth, but he didn't answer my phone call - I have to assume he was watching Season 6 of Buffy. So, no PGR2 last night.
Instead, I played some Gladius (about half a dozen battles completed) and Munch's Oddysee. I was going to play some DOAXBV, but I inadvertantly left the game at my workplace.
On Munch, I just started again. I had played to a certain point last time and got stuck. In just one night's play I have gotten to that point and beyond.
The reviews seem to indicate that Sudeki is a bit above average. I'm still in wait-and-see mode.

Charleston, SC
The Wife and I headed over to Charleston, South Carolina this weekend, so I didn't get to play much. Just a few battles in Gladius.
In the Good News category, I'm supposed to race with DaftApeth tonight. Maybe others will be online.
In the Even Better News department, Sudeki is being released tomorrow! I have good hopes for it. I will not be getting it on release; I will wait for the reviews, and the inevitable short-term price cut which should come in two weeks.

Minimal XBoxage
I'm deep into checkbook balancing, so no XBoxing for me.
Well, maybe a little.
I did three rounds of Gladius, just enough to complete the tournament I was working on.
I'm planning some PGR2 tonight, with a full set of opponents. We shall see how that works out.

Nothing. I got nothing.
No XBoxin' last night. Checkbook-balancing time. WOH-PAH!
Yet, the blog calls to me. I must update.
Don't know why... no one is reading. Yet.
Sudeki is coming out next week. It is one of the few titles that I am really looking forward to. I don't know if I will pick it up right away, though. I think I will monitor the reviews first.
Phobos22 was jonesin' for Driv3r - I had to warn him off. Whew! That was a close one. Few things at this point are worse than wasting good money on a bad game.

Halo
I tried some PGR2 racing last night, but was unsuccessful. BeltFed5000 was the only one on, and he was Away From XBox (AFX).
So I played Halo instead. I haven't really played at all alone. I played co-op with DaftApeth, and with six other players during a LAN party.
Playing on Normal level, I got through Pillar of Autumn and partially through the next section. Then SWMBO came down and fussed at me for playing too much.
Looks like tonight I will be balancing the checkbooks.

Gladius continues
I had no real desire for anything else.
Sure, I thought about Munch's Oddysee for about 5 seconds, but the thought of more gladiatorial battles pulled me back in.
I made quite a bit of progress, but nothing earth-shattering.
More later if something interesting happens.

Gladius begins
I have dived into Gladius with a gusto, clearing a significant number of challenges.
I bought the game from a friend who did not like it. This is understandable, considering the types of game that he usually likes. He is more of a hack-and-slash type, whereas Gladius is a much more tactical game.
There is not really a walk-through type FAQ for Gladius that I have seen, so I may just start again and create one.
Later in the evening, SWMBO came downstairs to check on me. She tried to pick up PGR2 again, but she had lost her touch. I put in Munch's Oddysee so that she could try a platformer, but she was completely disinterested.

The Wife played PGR2!
It's an incredible development. My wife has only ever tried PGR2 once before and was horrible. Fortunately, I had an insight; let her start out with a very slow car on a track without too many turns. Obvious in retrospect.
It started out rough, but she gradually improved. She drove for three hours last night and now has three medals; one Steel and two Bronze. That's not much, I know, but that is quite an accomplishment for her!
I played for a bit offline as well, and ranked up to 27. I tried to find some friends to race online, but there was some sort of major malfunction, so nothing was done.
I also started Gladius, which I quite enjoy. It reminds me a great deal of Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, which I did complete.

PGR2 Offline
With regard to my offline status in PGR2, I just wanted to document my status.
I have finished all but the last two sections of the Kudos World Series (KWS), so I have only Extreme and Ultimate remaining. Most of them I just ran through on Steel level, but I am gradually going through and re-running them on Silver level. Currently, I have four sections on Silver. My long-term goal is to complete them all on Silver so that I can unlock the Porsche 911 GT1.
More updates as I progress.

Long Beach goodness
Well, I have upgraded my PGR2 with the Long Beach Pack, so I wanted to give you my first impressions.
The new tracks: Pretty good, overall. Some very nice straightaways and some wicked turns. There are a couple of nice jumps on the tracks, but they only occur right at turns - I would have loved for them to be on a straight bit - I just love getting the "Cool Air" kudos!
The new cars: Some OK, some excellent. The Radical SR3 is an incredible rocket, as long as you don't drop the revs. The Ariel Atom 2 is a very, very fun car to drive. The Nardo is sweet as well; I will have to find a niche for it. The others don't thrill me too much, but I haven't tried all of them yet.
I also ranked up last night, so I am now rank 8 online. I ranked up a couple of time offline as well, so I am rank 26 offline. I still have much more to go.

PGR2 News!
My favorite (and pretty much only) XBox Live game is Project Gotham Racing 2. Bizarre Creations has announced today that the second downloadable content pack for PGR2 will soon be available. DLC1 was the Paris Booster Pack; DLC2 is the Long Beach Booster Pack. It looks to have some sweet new cars and some hopefully great tracks. I am definately looking forward to seeing this one. Game on!
Halo 2 and Fable
Not that it really matters, but I guess I should blog it for completeness, as I am blogging everything XBox-related. I have just pre-ordered Halo 2 and Fable. Halo 2 should be out November 9th, and Fable should be here September 13th.
There are other games I am interested in (Sudeki, Jade Empire, Starcraft: Ghost, Operation Flashpoint, DOA Ultimate, Leisure Suit Larry, Conker, et al), but these are two that I am willing to pay full price for. For Halo 2, I want the Limited Edition version. For Fable, the bonus disc.
For most games, I am content to wait until they are available as Used, or until they drop in price a bit. For example, I would like to have Full Spectrum Warrior, Ninja Gaiden, Pandora Tomorrow, Rainbow Six 3, and a few others. I have enough games to play for now that I can wait until the price drops a bit.

Quiet weekend
Several things kept me from gaming too much this weekend. The Wife started speaking to me again, I went to my mom's house for July 4th, and there were several household chores that had backed up a bit.
I did play for a few hours, though, off and on. Mostly Ghost Recon; ISuperGeek had expressed an interest in playing, and I had not played a single mission yet.
I played through the first mission once. Lost the second mission a couple of times. More later.

DOA3 Story complete
Still in a freeze-out, so I did about 2 hours of racing last night. I managed to race with 3 friends and several other aquaintances. Not enough kudos to rank up, but I didn't do too badly.
I also aquired a couple of new games, thanks to a friend. Add Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy and Gladius to my list.
After racing burnout, I went back to DOA3 Story mode and finished the last five characters. Yay! Story finished, and I got the end credits.
I went ahead and unlocked Ein as well, so I guess that's not too bad for a night's work.

PGR2 & DOA3 Training
Logged into XBox Live (XBL) and saw that BeltFed5000 was on PGR2. Again. Upon loading up PGR2, I saw that instead of being idle (as is standard), he was actually playing a solo game! I quickly created a game and invited him.
It wasn't long before he joined. Finally we get to race!
We are both pretty close to the next Kudos Rank, so I create the best car/track kudos combination I know of (so far); Moscow St. Basil's Circle and the Saleen S7. If someone knows of a better combination, please feel free to educate me. On a good run, I can usually get 2000+ kudos.
It took a few times, but we both leveled up. One of BeltFed's friends joined and we switched to the Nürburgring for a quick run (in which I did horribly). Signoff time for BeltFed.
Hmmm... I really should be doing story mode in DOA3, but I've been reading up on Lei Fang's moves and I really want to get away from all the button mashing. I do some Sparring for a bit, seeing how the moves work. After a good bit of this, I go back to story mode and do Brad Wong's section. Woah - there is quite a difference in style, and much of what I learned from Lei Fang's sparring does not transfer. I wind up button mashing my way through a lot of it, although I was able to pull off a few throws. Eleven down, five to go.
It's getting late, and I know of no better way to wind down the evening than with some Volleyball. I finish up Christie's vacation early and start with Lei Fang, mainly so that I can check on the status of her collection.
I refuse the tour and go looking for Christie (during Christie's vacation, she partnered with Lei Fang). I don't find her for three days. I ask her to partner, but she is not interested. Bummer. I butter her up with a couple of "like" gifts and a "love" gift and finally she agrees to join me. We play a few games of ass-kicking v-ball and I call it a night.
Since Lei Fang is behind on her collection, I plan to finish out her vacation and then I will go through one vacation each for the girls I haven't played yet (Helena, Ayane, and Kasumi).

DOA3 Story: Part 2. Plus, volleyball.
More freeze-out from the spouse, so that means more XBox!
Started out doing more DOA3 story mode, got through six more characters. Ten down, six more to go.
Also did some survival mode with Ayane.
I like Ayane's moves, perhaps even better than Lei Fang. I'm going to have to experiment with her a bit more.
Anyway, that took about 90 minutes, and the tip of my thumb is now bruised. I think I'm going to have to go with something a bit less stressful. Ah, I have just the thing!
Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball (DOAXBV)!
Last time I played, it was Hitomi. Since I'm trying to keep track of how my collections are going, I figure I had better go back to Christie. I had played with her earlier but had not kept track of her items.
I wound up playing longer than I had intended, a couple of hours, actually. But at least I now have a full record of exactly where she is in her collection.
Of all the girls I have played with in DOAXBV, I like Christie the best. As an added bonus, her best partner is Lei Fang, who is very cute.
I have only played through as Lisa, Tina, Lei Fang, Hitomi, and Christie. That means I still have Kasumi, Ayane, and Helena to do. I haven't completed any sets yet, so I'm just going through to get a sampling of each for now.
Finally, sleep.

Dead or Alive 3: Story Mode
There's a reason why I'm P. Whipped.
After a very happy reunion for a whole solid week, She Who Must Be Obeyed (SWMBO) is back in form and has plonked me firmly into the dog house.
The bottom-line result of this is that instead of spending the requisite "quality time" with her, I'm back in front of the XBox.
On to the meat of it.
So I fire up the XBox and notice that a friend is online. He's new to the XBox and new to XBL. He is in PGR2 and idle, so I create a game and invite him. And sit. And sit. I give him a generous five minutes, but he's still idle. Screw this, I want to play!
Blinx: The Time Sweeper. I bought this one after good reviews and recommendations. I have played quite a lot of Voodoo Vince, so I figured this would be in the same vein. Alas, it did not live up to my expectations. At this point, I expect that this is one title that I will be reserving for the kids. Put away after 30 minutes.
Dead or Alive 3 (DOA3). This is one that I have wanted to get into, but I'm not good at combos, so I wind up doing a lot of button mashing. But I decided to give it a try. After all, I'm pretty far into the DOA Volleyball game.
I like Lei Fang, so I do a little bit of training with her, trying to get the hang of some combos, with limited success. What the hell, I will try Story mode.
The first couple of fights were easy, but it becomes a bit challenging after that. Hmm, I will have to remember to figure out how to do counter-attacks and reversals. After a few losses and perseverance, I get to this Omega character. Who the hell is he? He's mean!
After his eventual defeat, I get a nice cutscene and then back to the menu. Oh! I beat it! After a bit more research, I see that there is now a theater section and I can view Lei Fang's movie whenever I want.
I did the Story mode for Hitomi and Kasumi and prepared for bed. Nope, it's still not out of my system yet. So I did the Story mode for Tina as well. OK, that's half of the girls, and 4 out of 16. I will try to do another 4 tomorrow.
Personal notes: I like Lei Fang's closed moves. Hitomi has a very nice kick, and Kasumi punches well. Tina is just all over the place; too open, especially her kick. I will have to do some more experimenting and learn their styles (strengths, weaknesses) a bit better.

No gaming, but trailer goodness
Did not get a chance to play tonight, but I did see a trailer for Brothers in Arms on GameTrailers.com. Looks good! Looks like a logical synthesis of FPS and squad tactics. I hope I can see more later.
Crimson Skies
Although the XBox was used heavily for playing DVDs this weekend, I was able to fire up Crimson Skies for a couple of hours, just to try to get back into the swing of things.
You see, I have a friend who just recently picked up XBL and CS. He is not into racing, so I rejoined my Crimson Skies experience so that I can give him a proper pasting when we meet online.
It's not easy. On "hard" difficulty, I got snagged fairly early on in the game. For sake of breaking the frustration barrier, I started a new game on "moderate" difficulty and went through several missions fairly quickly.
I anticipate more soon, now that I am catching up on my movie backlog.

News: Ninja Gaiden 1.1
There's a patch coming up for Ninja Gaiden in August. It's supposed to make the game harder and faster as well as fixing the camera problems.

No gaming today
My wife returned from a month out of the country, so (strangely enough) I am not playing on my XBox. I am otherwise occupied.
However, I will probably be getting on this coming weekend, so I will relate tales as they occur.
I now have five friends on XBL, so I can usually find someone to play with when I am on. Just to clarify, these are not just "Friends List" friends, these are "In Real Life" friends. So I guess I can't be too nasty to them online.
One of these (ISuperGeek) just got his gamertag yesterday. Although I urged him to pick up Project Gotham Racing 2, he declined based on some irrelevant fact that he does not like racing games. Pfeh. At least he did enjoy a rousing bout of Cat & Mouse during the GeekFest 2004 weekend. I expect I will find him for a little Crimson Skies at some point in the near future.
